stay for a cause..

The hotel is located very close to pappanasam beach..just 15 steps away..in quite home..great location...we stayed in twin room for 1000 INR...room is very basic..attached bathroom is also very basic...cleaned properly..best part of staying here is the money you provide goes to poor. the owner arranges to provide food every day to at least 108 needy people in varkala and its surrounding area. you can also participate in distributing foods everyday..great initiative... i would have not liked the room otherwise..seeing the genuine effort of the owner i will definitely stay here if I go again to Varkala and will definitely recommend it to the other people...
Not recommended and it's a false charity.

The inn is associated with Anna Kshetra a so called "charitable organization" in which, apparently, rent money goes to the food for local poor people. However, the guy who runs it, not only expects guest to help him in his daily food street mission, but he also wants to get money/funds from them including running away with money from guests like myself, which doesn't make it genuine. Thus, I definitely wasn't expecting that the guy who runs the place would run away with the change money he owes me for the accommodation, leaving me on the station looking for him without half of my money back, especially after helping me with some of the daily food distribution mission. And, when I finally managed to find him again he just told me "peace" and gave me some of the food he usually gives to the poor. However, after unwrapping it I found out that the food was far from being nutritious since there was just some mini naan and curry sauce wrapped up on a newspaper, how bad! Also, on arrival the walkway to the hotel smelled, the room was unclean, the bed sheets unchanged and the toilet water soiled and rusty. So I would, definitely, not recommend that place to anyone, especially if you are looking to help a genuine charity. Besides, it's also a poor choice compared to other budget hotels available within that area.
Highly recommend

I stayed here for 4 nights as a solo traveller. The room was clean, quiet, cheap and had a nice swinging chair just outside the door on the terrace. The beach is a 3 minute walk down the road. Ram is a great host! You can help him serve breakfast to the homeless in the morning. It's well worth it to grab a coffee afterward and have a chat with him about his views of the world! Very nice experience there, do visit!
Quiet, spiritual, friendly, laid back, cheap, convenient, bohemian?

I chose the inn coz it had single rooms at a very competitive rate for my first night in Varkala. I had booked in advance via book.com as I was arriving late evening. However, the owner(Ram) had no knowledge of it but offered me a double at the same rate... Very decent of him! Ram is a peaceful soul and instantly likeable. He's for the most part an invisible host which I like. In Kerala I've found that staff and managers are often too intrusive; Gratitude Inn is the exact opposite. My room was a small double and It had a frame for my mosie net.... It was sufficiently clean for me to be comfortable and everything worked as it should do. Wifi worked well and it has only a few rooms for rent. I guess I'm recommended it for its unpretentious, relaxed and unhurried atmosphere.
Not bad for such money
